Anniversary (part 1): Dinner in Blackbird at the Ayala Triangle Makati.

Weeks before our anniversary, T asked me what I wanted to do.  It just so happens that the Globe iPhone 6s launch is on the same day so I asked him if we could just go there and celebrate our anniversary some other day.   Of course, it was totally fine with T but he still surprised me with dinner in Blackbird at the Nielson Tower before the event.

There is a historical significance to Blackbird which I only learned when we dined there.  The Nielson Tower, where the restaurant is located, was part of the first airport in the Philippines built in 1937.  Wow, that's even before World War II!  And almost 80 years later, here we are.

For our drinks, I order the Blackbird Iced Tea while T orders the Earl Grey Tea.  Both drinks are good.  Mine has a lemony flavor while T's drink has a strong Earl Grey taste, which is good, because I hate watered down brewed iced tea.

For our starter, T orders the Apple, Pecan, Cos Lettuce with Green Goddess Dressing (PhP390/$8.25+).  The serving size of the salad is just right and can be shared by two people.

T also orders the Crispy Soft Shell Crabs (PhP 390/$8.25+) with cauliflower puree, mint, and apricot chutney.  The serving size is only good for one but since we have a salad plus our own mains, this is just right for us.  I like how the apricot chutney balances the saltiness of the crabs.

For his main, T orders the Branzino Fillet (PhP980/$21+) with roast fennel, tomato, potato, and lemon rocket.   T gives me a bite to try and I like it.

For my main, I choose the Dry Rub Wagyu Hanger Steak (PhP980/$20.65+) which comes with mustard butter and fries, but instead of fries, I opt for the house salad with mustard vinaigrette dressing instead.  The meat is flavorful, especially with the mustard butter, although it is not as tender as the other wagyus I've tried.

For our dessert, T orders the Burnt Butter and Vanilla Seed Ice Cream topped with candied popcorn, chocolate brownies, and salted caramel sauce.  This is heaven!  A must try.

Thank you for this lovely dinner date T!  Happy Anniversary!

Thumbs Up!
Nice ambiance (perfect for dates!).
Good food.

Thumbs Down!
Nothing really.

Verdict
Like in his other restaurants The People's Palace and Sala, Chef Colin McKay worked his magic again at Blackbird!
