Coming from Cebu, I thought I wouldn't make it to the invitation of fellow book club member Patty Cuyugan and Kathy Ngo of Just Thai in Molito Arcade because of the delays in the flight schedules. After finally landing in Manila, I was so drained and sleepy but I really wanted to go. So, I decided to take a quick shower in the hope of waking my almost-already-sleeping brain.
And it worked! I made it to dinner. I love Thai food but T isn't really into it or anything curry tasting so the last time I ate in a Thai restaurant was probably almost a decade ago.
Just to illustrate how much I like the cuisine, back in the day, there was only one Thai restaurant in Alabang called Flavors & Spices and my family would go there almost every week. As baon in school or dinner at home, mom would always make Tom Yum soup and pandan chicken.
And when the RP Youth volleyball team, of which I was a part of, was sent to Thailand to compete, everyone lived off Knorr seasoning and rice (seriously!) because they found the dishes too spicy. It was only me and another teammate of mine who enjoyed the authentic Thai dishes served to us.
So now that I've established how much I love Thai food, let's go to the dishes of Just Thai. Here's a rundown of what was served to us:
Yam Neua / Thai Beef Salad (P350+SC)
Seared and marinated beef served atop crisp lettuce and cucumbers.
I like how the dressing is served on the side so the lettuce and other vegetables don't get soggy. This dish is good for sharing.
Gai Sate / Chicken Sate (P290+SC)
Tender slices of skewered chicken marinated in curried coconut milk. Served with peanut sauce.
I liked this dish especially the peanut sauce. The presentation is nice and colorful, too.
Gaeng Lenang / Vegetable Tofu in Yellow Curry (P260+SC)
I love tofu and curry so this seems to be a very promising dish. I liked it but felt that it lacked a bit of the curry taste and spiciness. Although I was told that they really tempered the flavor because some people in the group weren't that fond of curry or spice.
Pad Gaprow Talay / Mixed Seafood in Basil (P280+SC)
This is a must-try! My favorite dish out of all of the dishes served that night.
Gai Pad Met Ma Maling / Chicken with Cashew (P380)
I love how the colors all mix together but I would have preferred a little more spiciness. Of course, that's a personal choice and again, it was a request from the group to make the dishes a little bit milder.
Pad Thai (P280+SC)
One of Thailand's national dish of stir-fried rice noodles with eggs, tamarind juice, chili, peanuts, coriander, and lime.
This is another dish that I liked. Again, I noticed how nice the presentation was.
Crabmeat Fried Rice (P220)
And as if Just Thai's staff read our minds, they gave us fried rice to try.
Since I was always talking about adding a little bit more spiciness or flavor, they gave me powder and sliced peppers so I can mix the food on my plate the way I want it.
Lemongrass Juice (P80+SC)
Since I came from a scorching hot Cebu, I wanted something refreshing to drink so I got this. But I was also made to try the Thai Iced Coffee (P120+SC) which I think would be good to counter the spiciness of the food.
Khao Niaow Ma Muang / Sticky Rice Pudding (P260+SC)
Sweet and fresh mango slices over sticky rice then smothered with coconut sauce.
I am not a stranger to sticky rice but this has got to be the nicest sticky rice presentation I've seen. The serving's really big, too! Probably good for 3-4 persons.
Tha Kho (P140+SC)
Coconut pudding wrapped in pandan leaves.
We were also served Tom Yum (P190+SC), which is a hot and sour Thai soup with basic broth made of stock and fresh ingredients imported from Thailand; and Kuai Tiao Nua (P280+SC), which is a steaming bowl of stewed beef noodle soup. I had three servings of the Tom Yum, it was so good! Both dishes are already good for sharing.
Thank you for the invitation Kathy and Patty! It was nice meeting the rest of the group :)
Good food at reasonable prices.
Nice food presentation.
You can request whether you want your dishes mild, normal, or super spicy.
I want to come back with my mom to try the other dishes like my favorite pandan chicken and to have another serving of good Tom Yum soup.
