What's New in Yabu? Iidako Salad, Chicken Salad, Miso Katsu, Oroshi Katsu, and Mochi Balls!

T and I are fans of Yabu: The House of Katsu so when I got an invitation to try their new dishes, I immediately said yes!

We went to the SM Aura branch because we haven't been there yet.

T and I have not yet tried appetizers during our visits to Yabu because we couldn't decide on which set to get.  Apparently, you can get ANY two appetizers listed on the menu.  T and I always thought we had to choose from the sets.  We ordered the two newest appetizers.

The first one is the Iidako Salad which is baby octopus marinated in a sweet savory sauce and tossed with crisp slices of cucumber.  To be honest, I was hesitant to try this dish because I don't eat anything young or cute.  So I just took out my chopsticks and digged in without looking at the little baby octopus.  T liked it.  This appetizer in a word?  Interesting.  Try it!

Another is the Chicken Salad which is fresh seasonable vegetables tossed with shredded chicken and crisp wanton strips in mustard vinaigrette.   I like this salad because of the tasty dressing.   It's good but it seems not-so-Japanese compared to the other selections.

For his main, T got the Miso Katsu which is your choice of Kurobuta (P595/$13), Hire (P360/$8), Rosu (P385/$8.70) cutlet topped with sweet miso sauce, sprinkled generously with spring onions and ground sesame seeds, all served on a Japanese hot plate.

The katsu comes with a generous helping of miso sauce so if you're hungry and don't want to "prepare" your food and sauce, this dish is perfect for you.

Here's a closer look at T's Miso Katsu.

I got the Oroshi Katsu Set which is your choice of Kurobota (P595/$13), Hire (P420/$9), Rosu (P390/$8.70) or Chicken (P370/$8.30) cutlet served with a citrusy-Ponzu based sauce.  I chose the Hire because I don't like fat on my katsu.

Here's a closer look at my Oroshi Hire Katsu.

First step is to squeeze the grapefruit on the katsu to neutralize the smell of the radish.

Then pour the Ponzu sauce over the katsu.  It's a refreshing twist to the classic katsus of Yabu so if you're looking for something new to try, order this.

Both katsu sets are served with unlimited white rice or brown organic rice, miso soup, Japanese pickles and organic cabbage.

I thought I didn't have room for dessert but I just had to try Yabu's Mochi Ice Cream.  I love the color combination of the platter.

I love green tea ice cream so the Green Tea Mochi is my favorite.

T's favorite is the Black Sesame Mochi.

But the Red Bean Mochi is also good.

Before going home, I went to the washroom and guess what I saw.  Hmmm... that logo looks familiar.

I spy "Joei & Me" on Yabu's wall!

Thank you so much Yabu! And it was so nice meeting and chatting with you Erika.  Til next time!

And good news to all Alabang people: Yabu opened a branch in Alabang Town Center.  Yay!

Thumbs Up!
Friendly and attentive servers.
Great katsu, crunchy on the outside and yet tender and juicy inside.

Thumbs Down!
Nothing really.

Verdict
Because of Yabu, every diet will start tomorrow! ;)
