Love tonkatsu? Then you really have to try Yabu: The House of Katsu.
T and I used to go to Megamall, even if it's a bit far from us, just to eat in Yabu. They finally heard our prayers and opened a branch in Mall of Asia!
Why Yabu? Their menu says it all.
"When you are served OUR Yabu Katsu, you can tell the difference right away --- the katsu is so crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, you can slice it with chopsticks."
There's also a guide on how to create the dipping sauce.
I had T grind the seeds first.
Then we added the sauce and other condiments as we ate.
Their best seller is the Tonkatsu Set which comes with unlimited Japanese rice, miso soup, Japanese pickles, unlimited cabbage with sesame dressing, and a bowl of fruit. There are two kinds of Tonkatsu Sets: Rosu (Pork Loin) and Hire (Pork Tenderloin). I got the 100g Hire (P330/$8).
On the other hand, T got the Premium Tonkatsu Set (P515/$13) which also includes unlimited Japanese rice, miso soup, unlimited cabbage with sesame dressing, and a bowl of fruit. The set comes with Kurobuta which is the "world's finest pork". What Kobe is to beef, Kurobuta is to pork.
A closer look at T's food.
Verdict
T and I have not found a place which beats Yabu for the best tonkatsu in the Philippines. Japanese has always been comfort food to us so we'll definitely be back soon!
