Powerbooks' Promo for 'Casual Vacancy' Gone Wrong.

J.K. Rowling, sounds familiar? She's the author of the famous Harry Potter series, which I "grew up" reading. So when news came out that Rowling is coming up with another book, I immediately pre-ordered a copy from PowerBooks.

Casual Vacancy is J.K. Rowling's first novel for adults.

"When Barry Fairbrother dies in his early forties, the town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty facade is a town at war.

Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils --- Pagford is not what it first seems.
And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity, and unexpected revelations?"

Hmmm. It doesn't seem that interesting but like they say, don't judge a book by it's cover.. Or, in this case, its flap. But that's not what bothered me with my purchase.

PowerBooks and National Bookstore offered a 30% discount off the regular price of 'Casual Vacancy' as a perk for customers who will pre-order the book. From P1,422 ($34), we paid only P995 ($24). But when I went to PowerBooks to pick up my book, I saw that they were selling the book in-store for only P945 ($22)!

Disappointing. No one in Powerbooks even bothered to explain why they were selling the books cheaper in the store than the pre-order price! Then I found something inside my book --- a letter from National Bookstore (same owner as Powerbooks) explaining that they needed to adjust the selling price of Casual Vacancy to "offer our customers the best value possible".

For the love of books, I won't go to Powerbooks or National Bookstore and make a big fuss out of this. I just want to state for the record that their promo is misleading and wrong.

  1. That is depressing. But I do would have to give them credit for the letter and gc. Although, they do have to organize these things much better in the future. =)
