Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson.

Rick Riordan.  Unfamiliar?   How about this: Percy Jackson.  Ring any bell?  That's right!  Rick Riordan is the author of the Percy Jackson series which became a worldwide phenomenon when its first book was adapted into film by 20th Century Fox.

I was supposed to write about Percy Jackson a while back but something always came up.  Even as time passed, I always felt like writing about the series but I couldn't do it though because a review about a book or a film released months ago might seem useless.

But discovering something via my sister, I have an excuse to write about Rick Riordan again!  I'll tell you what that is in a bit.

Back to the Percy Jackson series... What first attracted me to it is its similarity to the Harry Potter series.  Normally, I frown at copycats as imitation is one of my biggest pet peeves.  So why am I still drawn to the Percy Jackson series?

The answer hit me when I got to see the movie, The Lightning Thief.  Percy Jackson wasn't trying to be Harry Potter.  It was me who was turning Percy Jackson into Harry Potter!

After the movie, I realized that there was nothing at all similar between Percy Jackson and Harry Potter. Percy Jackson is an emo slash rebel kid while Harry Potter was a nerd slash geek.

As for the book vs the movie review, I maybe a bookworm but at the same time I'm a movie fanatic as well.  Which is probably the reason why you'll rarely hear me say 'the book is better than the movie' even if often times, if not always, this is undoubtedly true.

Why is that?

Well, I give a huge leeway for directors and scriptwriters to turn books into screenplays suited for Hollywood and its audience.  Not all of us are bookworms, not all of us like to read.  That's why there are books --- for people like us to enjoy.  On the other hand, that's why there are movies --- for people like them (and also me) to enjoy.  Capish?  So enough of the 'book is better than the movie' phrase.  It really is getting too old already.

And now for the reason why I resurrected my Percy Jackson treasure chest again, Rick Riordan wrote a new book!  it's called The Red Pyramid.

"Since their mother's death, Carter and Sadie have become near strangers. While Sadie has lived with her grandparents in London, her brother has traveled the world with their father, the brilliant Egyptologist, Dr. Julius Kane.  One night, Dr. Kane brings the siblings together for a "research experiment" at the British Museum, where he hopes to set things right for his family. Instead, he unleashes the Egyptian god Set, who banishes him to oblivion and forces the children to flee for their lives.  Soon, Sadie and Carter discover that the gods of Egypt are waking, and the worst of them — Set-has his sights on the Kanes. To stop him, the siblings embark on a dangerous journey across the globe — a quest that brings them ever closer to the truth about their family, and their links to a secret order that has existed since the time of the pharaohs."

OMG.  It's as if Rick Riordan's reading my mind!  The only two things I got obsessed about when Iwas child was Greek Mythology and Ancient Egypt.

If you still aren't convinced, Disney's allowing us to take a sneak peek at the first chapter of the book. Iwant.one.NOW.  But the only thing preventing me from getting a copy is the fact that this book is part of a series.  And I always want to buy books in a set, for collection purposes.

  1. Let me jump to the election thingy... yes, I don't write anything about it too. Of course I can't, will I be posting the colors of the candidates or their outfits while campaigning? Hahaha!

And like you, elections and politics for me fall into one of those categories you mentioned too. So let's just be mum on the issue and let's just feel good!!!

I watched Iron Man2 on opening day with my boys... it's entertaining. Enough said! Hahaha!

Now back to Percy Jackson, I haven't read any of the books but I would love to. I am a bookworm and I always read the book before I watch the movie. Harry Potter... I'm a big fan. Twilight... I'm a big fan too. I've read them all. Now, I will head over to Borders and get me my Percy Jackson books. Yes, I'm in SoCal now. xoxo

    Haba ng comment ko. Hahaha!

  3. I was attracted to the Percy Jackson movie because like you, I'm a sucker for those greek mythology related things...I've been meaning to buy and read the books but now that you mentioned Red Pyramid, I think I want to wait for that...one more thing we have in common: I'm fascinated with ancient Egypt too!

  6. re elections...like i said in fb, i wish everybody would stop publicly bashing the candidates they're not voting for. i mean, i get it. there are some candidates i hate as well. there was actually a time when i was guilty of forwarding negative emails about that candidate. but then i realized, if we join their mudslininging bandwagon, how are we better than them? so i stopped. and now i just try to convince everybody to vote. because, i think, if there's one thing we're all tired, it's a crappy philippines....hahaha.

  11. wow. glad there are sequels of the lightning thief. i haven't read any of them but the movie was pretty cool (and logan lerman is sooo cute <33) although many complained that the movie didn't really capture the beauty of the novel.

anyway, iron man 2 is quite interesting, although not as interesting as the first one. i watch the movie because i'm a fan of both robert downey jr. and scarlett johansson. ;)

  16. Apparently this is really good, and your review agrees, but it was publicised very badly here in the UK - I thought it just looked a little weird. I'll check it out now!

  19. For some reason book series that become really popular lose the appeal for me. It's why I stopped reading Harry Potter. :)

Ironman 2 is so much fun! Very witty lines.

  21. Hello Joei! Its nice to see you post again. :) I'm such a fan :)

I was intrigued by your title. I'm a fan of Rick Riordan and I have the Percy Jackson series and watched the movie. But I'm still a fan of the 'book is better' though.. Have you read the 39 Clues? Its a series also but he only wrote the 1st of 10 books.

On elections, uh-oh. Though I didn't campaign for any candidate, I did post on my experience because I had to fall in line (sitting nonetheless) for almost 2 hrs.) And a post on why most bloggers don't post on politics.

Watched Iron Man2 already...Busy Boy won't let the weekend past without seeing it. I love the cartoons and I love Robert Downey Jr (through drug addiction and all) Hope you enjoyed the movie as well as we did. :)
